Underneath

Infrasound. The name for low-frequency sound below 20 hertz. Our ears can’t hear it, but our bodies sense it - uneasy shivers, anxiety vertigo. Thought to be caused by volcanoes, earthquakes, old duct work and low-level machinery. In some places, infrasound is so intrusive it’s simply called The Hum. This may be why old buildings feel creepy or scary movies and theater weave it into the soundscape.

What do you do with what’s not there?

Even in silence, still sensing presence underneath.

This work, and the companion thesis pieces, follows light and dark, quiet and loud, the ironic untold story of the Greek God of Silence, and the daunting presence behind waiting for the phone to ring.
