Carbon, WY

The Place Where the Rocks Burned

In southern Wyoming, beyond the Medicine Bow city limits and underneath the vast sky, is a ghost town. Meditating on the story of Carbon and its prolific historian, Nancy, this book chronicles things lost against the reverent skyline captured both as memory and photograph.

“Outside on the hillside of town a silent city lies,  Where monuments and blocks of stone among the graves arise;”

Mrs. Charles Ellis, 1932

About

I can’t tell the story of all the people that have loved this land far before me, but I can see the hawks’ reclamation of the river bed and I can see the ghosts, people who have loved and respected this place for 8,000 years. Deeply inspired by Laura Webb Nichol’s photos and Richard McGuire’s book “Here”, this book captures the overlapping view of time and stories I see when I visit Carbon. To stand on the hill and imagine what once was. To find the quiet stories running throughout this skyline.

Carbon, WY was completed in 2026. Written, designed, and produced by Becca Josephson. Printed letterpress and risograph. 10”x9” closed, edition of 30.
